Autograph manuscript of original song lyrics written by John Greiner for the presidential contest between Whig party nominee Zachary Taylor and Democrat Lewis Cass in 1848. The untitled song celebrates Zachary Taylor's flinty toughness and fierce commitment to the Whig cause while ridiculing his political detractors and Whig Party enemies such as John Tyler, a former Whig and U.S. president who was expelled from the party in 1841.

Born in Philadelphia in 1810, John Greiner moved to Marietta, Oh., in the late 1830s and worked as a house and sign painter. Active in the temperance movement and in Whig Party politics in Ohio, he won fame as a Whig campaign songwriter and a leader of songs at Whig raillies. He served as Ohio state librarian from 1845-1851 and was later appointed secretary of the Territory of New Mexico, a post he held between 1852 and 1853. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico. Following the battle of Monterey, Taylor was ordered to join General Winfield Scott at the siege of Veracruz. Taylor's victory at at the Battle of Buena Vista made him a national hero....
