Papers of Signe Skott Cooper (born in January 1921 in Iowa), a nurse from Middleton, Wis., concerning her World War II service and that of her brother and father. Included is her own correspondence and memorabilia from Fort Belvoir, Va., 1943, and from India, 1944-1945, along with miscellaneous notes on other Wisconsin nurses in the war, particularly Ellen Gertrude Ainsworth, the only Wisconsin nurse killed in action during the war, and brief papers/memorabilia of Marguerite Sill Whittingham of Madison. Also present is correspondence of her brother, Frank Oskar Skott, who served in Europe with the Blackhawk (86th) Division in 1945 and in the Philippines during 1945-1946, and the papers of her father, Hans Skott, a civilian employed by the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey to interview German prisoners of war in London and civilians in Germany. His 1945 letters concern general conditions and agricultural practices in England and Germany, including a description of the "Women's Land Army" in England. There is also correspondence from 1946 while he did agricultural relief work in China for the U.N. Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. The collection also includes Cooper's photographs from India, an album of Hans Skott's photos from Europe, and miscellaneous photos of Frank Skott, Ainsworth, and Whittingham. There are also photographs related to nursing schools in Wisconsin. circa 1890 - 1980.
