Records of the Students for a Libertarian Society (SLS) and of its local chapters in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1979-1980); Madison, Wisconsin (1981-1984), and Evanston, Illinois (1983-1984). Included are local and national SLS administrative records, correspondence, convention records, flyers, opinion papers, literature, and clippings primarily relating to anti-draft and anti-tax activities and to a proposed anti-pornography ordinance in Madison. Also present is some material on related anti-draft organizations in Minnesota with whom the SLS collaborated and some personal papers of David Beito, creator and collector of these files, including campaign literature from his unsuccessful 1982 congressional campaign. SLS is a group formed in April, 1979, to move college students toward the Libertarian Party movement, with which it is associated. At its height it had about 60 chapters on campuses around the country. It sponsored national demonstrations on various Libertarian issues and was a leading group against the military draft. The photographic portion of the collection relates to two protests by SLS in Madison, Wis., and Minneapolis, Minn. Also included is a poster and images of David Beito. This includes material from the New York University Chapter.
