Papers of Howard Greene, a Milwaukee businessman, genealogist, and amateur historian, including transcribed and original documents pertaining to his own career and interests and to various members of his family, and extensive records on his role as receiver of the Bankers Joint Stock Land Bank of Milwaukee, 1927-1938. Family papers represent his grandfather, Nantucket sea merchant and trader Welcome Arnold Greene; his father, Thomas A. Greene, a pharmaceuticals wholesaler in Milwaukee; and his uncle, Captain Howard Greene, who died while serving with the 24th Wisconsin during the Civil War. Pertaining to Welcome Arnold Greene there is business and family correspondence, original and transcribed journals concerning numerous merchant voyages and trips, personal financial record books, account books and logs of several Nantucket merchant ships and whalers (some available on microfilm), and genealogical material. For Thomas A. Greene there is a transcribed journal concerning the beginning of Greene and Button, his drug business in Milwaukee; miscellaneous correspondence and financial papers; and balance sheets, histories, and other financial records. For Captain Greene there is correspondence concerning his Civil War service and other biographical material. Pertaining to Howard Greene's own career are original order books and other records pertaining to the service of the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. The receivership records, which consist of correspondence primarily with the Federal Farm Loan Board and numerous detailed financial reports, document the management of the receivership, as well as contain much detailed financial data and documentary photographs about individual farms in Wisconsin and Minnesota for which the bank held the mortgage. Monthly reports to the FFLB are available only on microfilm. Greene's interest in family history and genealogy is documented in numerous notes, charts, recollections, transcriptions, and collected original documents. In addition to Greene and Arnold family members, these documents also refer to connections with the Cadle family, the Tenney family, and John G. McMynn. Among the signatures of autograph value contained in the original documents are William Clark, William Ellery, Nathanael Greene, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington.
