Miscellaneous records of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey dating from its existence as an independent state agency which ended in 1931 when the Survey was transferred to the University of Wisconsin. Included are seven letterbooks of outgoing correspondence, 1901-1910, of geologist Samuel Weidman, and one of hydrographer L.S. Smith; departmental budgets and brief related correspondence of Director E.A. Birge; and reports of rural road conditions dating to the pre-1912 period when the Survey was responsible for state highways. Also included are photographs and negatives used to illustrate publications and to document summer field work, ca. 1910-1930.

The position of a Wisconsin State Geologist, created in 1853, was superseded in 1857 by the Commissioners of the Geological, Mineralogical and Agricultural Survey. The work of the commissioners was concluded in 1862 and in 1873, a state chief geologist was appointed. In 1897, the Legislature transferred the work of the state geologist to the newly-created Geological and Natural History Survey, an independent agency.
