University of Wisconsin students' military training photographs, 1870s[?], 1880, 1907-1927.

Photographs of military training of students at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Shown are groups of the cadet corps known as The Battalion, Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) members, and trainees in the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) in classes in 1918. Two undated images of posed groups are tentatively attributed to the 1870s. One circa 1880 image shows cadets marching past South Hall. Many show marching and formations on the lower campus; most date 1916-1918 but one of these is postmarked 1907 and another postmarked 1912. Background buildings include the Armory (Red Gym), St. Francis House, the State Historical Society, and houses on State and Langdon streets. Other unidentified images show soldiers in the field. A series made in 1918 show trainees at work in classes on carpentry, sheet metal working, engineering, electrical wiring, automobile repair, gasoline engine mechanics, and field radio.
