Letters and photographs, 1913-1918.

Letters written to family members by Wheeler detailing his experiences as a member of the United States Army Air Service during World War I. Vivid and frank in his description, Wheeler writes about aviation training, living conditions, cultural observations, reflections on the war, and leisure time activities at Aviation Ground School in Champaign (I11.), flight school at Gerstner Filed in Lake Charles (La.) and Carlstrom Field in Arcadia (Fla.), and Gunnery School at Door Field, Arcadia. Typed transcripts of excerpts prepared by Allan B. Wheeler accompany the letters and are illustrated with wartime images of S.L. Wheeler.
