Two photographs preserved by Donald Schultz: one taken in the early 1900's showing a Milwaukee Road cooking crew in their box car kitchen during the laying of track near Mobridge, South Dakota (including Schultz's father and uncle); and one showing Bob McPherson and Charley Banderob, a bridge builder from Thorp, Wisconsin, standing on the Waterford, Wisconsin, water tank with a bird's-eye view of the village spreading below them, 1898.

Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad Company or the "Milwaukee Road" opened in Montana in August, 1908. The company felt that to be competitive it had to expand its services to the Pacific Coast. Despite the fact that it had to buy most of its right away and avoid established areas, they were able to build 2,300 miles of track in three years.
