Records, 1919-1982.

Records of an organization of professional social workers and citizens originally formed in 1881 as the Wisconsin Conference of Charities and Corrections in order to improve social welfare programs in the state. As its functions evolved, the council operated as the Wisconsin Conference of Social Work (1918-1941) and the Wisconsin Welfare Council (1941-1973), before reincorporating under its current name in 1973. Archival records document council history after 1918, although published minutes and proceedings for earlier years are available in the Society Library. The records consist of administrative correspondence of the board and the executive director; a nearly complete run of Board of Directors minutes and related agenda materials; planning materials and speeches (a few in recorded form) for state and local conferences; committee files pertaining to the council's monitoring of revisions in the Children's Code and other social welfare activities; reports and studies; histories; and financial records and related material documenting the council and its long relation with United Way, the United Defense Fund, and Wisconsin Community Chests and Councils. The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register. Additional photographic accessions are described below.
