Madagascar Records 1979-2005; 1988-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Madagascar. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Fiangonana Loterana Malagasy (FLM) [Malagasy Lutheran Church] in mission efforts. The records also represent efforts on the part of DGM to provide funding for various projects coordinated by the FLM and its synods. The records are from 1979-2005, but the bulk date from 1988-2002. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently, such as job descriptions, by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Olin K. Sletto, and Mr. Gaylord M. Thomas. Record types include correspondence, meeting minutes, project proposals, progress reports, audit reports, financial statements, budget proposals, project reports, agenda, exhibits, memoranda, and topical papers and resource materials. The series includes records related to the structure of the FLM, including correspondence and reports from its president, general secretary, and treasurer, and financial reports, audits, and budgets for the FLM. There are also records related to synods that comprise the FLM. Records also include work related to the FLM's development department, education department, evangelism department, health department, agriculture department, literature department, women's department, and a center for communication. In addition to records that document DGM's direct relationship with the FLM, there are also records in this series for the association ELCA missionaries working in Madagascar. First referred to as the American Lutheran Missionary Fellowship (ALMF), in 1993 the named changed to Missionaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Madagascar (MELCAM). Subjects include a tuberculosis project and dental program administered by the FLM's health department, disaster relief efforts, companion synod programs with synods of the ELCA, maritime ministries, the political situation in Madagascar in 2002, leadership development, building projects, outreach to Muslims, and production of films to be used in outreach and educational efforts of the FLM. Records are arranged by subseries and are written in English, French, or Malagasy.
