Amos R. Cherry diary and manuscripts, 1862 Jan.-1870 Feb. 14 (bulk 1862 Jan.- 1864 Nov. 8).

This collection includes a diary with entries between July 5 and November 8, 1864 and separate holograph manuscripts bearing dates between January 1862 and July 10, 1863. The manuscripts include some correspondence written by Amos Cherry addressed to "Friends at home." Cherry's accounts describe camp activities, troop movements, and places visited. The diary volume also includes a few later entries, primarily accounts.

Amos Cherry moved with his family to Iowa from New York in 1856. He was a prominent Johnson County farmer and served terms as Lincoln Township clerk, secretary of the school board and Johnson County treasurer. On September 1, 1861 he enlisted in Company B of the 14th Iowa Infantry. Along with companies A and C of the same regiment his company was sent to fight against the Indians on the frontier. The companies left Iowa City on November 1, 1861 and arrived a month later at Fort Rundell in Dakota...
