Amos Cherry moved with his family to Iowa from New York in 1856. He was a prominent Johnson County farmer and served terms as Lincoln Township clerk, secretary of the school board and Johnson County treasurer. On September 1, 1861 he enlisted in Company B of the 14th Iowa Infantry. Along with companies A and C of the same regiment his company was sent to fight against the Indians on the frontier.
