The Cigar Makers National Union of the United States formed in 1864 with delegates from local unions in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other cities in attendance. The Union became international in 1867 with the affiliation of Canadian locals. In 1875, the Cigar Makers of New York affiliated with the CMIUA and became Local 144. Samuel Gompers was the Local's president and Adolph Strasser was financial secretary. Gompers was appointed an international organizer and in 1886 became a vice pr...
