Amoskeag was founded in 1825 by Samuel Slater and others, with mills in Manchester, New Hampshire, and corporate headquarters in Boston, Mass. It was incorporated in 1831 and became one of the largest producers of cotton cloth in the world. It closed in bankruptcy in 1935, and its assets were taken over by Amoskeag Industries, formed by a group of Manchester citizens and businesses to act as a holding company and real estate broker for the bankrupt manufacturer.
