This collection consists of five folders, comprised primarily of correspondence relating to the Brown family of Bridgewater, Va., 1872-1919. Also included are some photographs, printing plates, and a typescript copy of Johannes Braun's "Treatise on slavery and serfdom," 1818.

John Brown (Johannes Braun), 1771-1850, was one of the best educated clergymen of his time in western Virginia. Born near Bremen, Germany, he came to the United States in 1797, becoming the leading minister of the German Reformed Church in Virginia.
