Born in New York State, Paul completed four years of high school and was working as a machinist at the time of his enlistment in the Army on October 21, 1942. He was assigned to Company F, 86th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 10th Mountain Division where he served at Camp Hale, Colorado, Camp Swift, Texas and in Italy.
