Manuscript copies of monographs, articles, and documents that relate to the history and geography of Sable Island, Nova Scotia between the 16th and mid-20th centuries. Known for its treacherous sand bars and the unpredictable seas surrounding it, Sable Island has been the site of many shipwrecks. Included are copies of works by Simon D. Macdonald, John Bernard Gilpin, George Patterson, and Louis Dow Scisco. Also included is biographical material on people associated with Sable Island, including Dorothea L. Dix, Thomas Hancock, Andrew Le Mercier, and Marc Lescarbot. Among the shipwrecks discussed in various parts of the collection is the 1846 wreck of the schooner Arno. The copies were made by Edwin R. Jump.

Dix was a humanitarian crusader for the mentally ill. She investigated the conditions of the hospitalized insane in many U.S. states and some European countries, and petitioned state and national legislatures for reforms.
