The vocal scores include two copies in English by J. B. Cramer, London (1874, pl. no. M. 3474) and five copies in German and French by Bote & Bock, Berlin, in two different editions. The first edition (1861) carries the plate number B. & B. 5001--B. & B. 5009 and the second (188-?) the plate number 5000. The orchestra parts are manuscript, in two sets. The vocal parts include 56 mimeoed parts in English, and four manuscript English parts. Several parts bear the names of performers. Eighteen parts are manuscript, in German. The libretto is in German, published by Bote & Bock, Berlin (1861). It carries the name of W. Kreitz. The promptbooks include two typed books, in English, and six books in German, three of which are manuscript and three typed. The dialogue parts include 30 mimeoed English parts in four sets, three sets of nine typed, German parts, and 13 manuscript parts in German carrying the stamp of L. E. Richter, Hamburg. Several of these parts carry the names of performers.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
