One edition is French, by Brandus and Dufour, Paris (1864, pl. no. B. et D. 10701), and one edition is English, by Ascherberg, London (189-?, pl. no. 877). The vocal parts are manuscript, in German. The promptbooks include one manuscript book in German, three mimeoed books in English, and two manuscript books in English. One of the manuscript English books carries the name of Jesse Williams and the date November 26, '94. The dialogue parts are manuscript, in German. Several carry the names of performers.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
