The vocal scores include one copy in French for the three-act version of the opera, by Choudens, Paris (nouvelle éd., 1885?, pl. no. A.C. 5100); four copies in French of the four-act version by Choudens (5e ed., c1907, pl. no. A.C. 5100, A.C. 5301); two copies in German and Italian by Choudens bearing the German title "Hoffmann's Erzählüngen" (c1907, pl. no. A.C. 5100, A.C. 5301); and 24 copies in English by Schirmer, New York, carrying the title "Tales of Hoffmann" (c1911, pl. no. 24030). The orchestra parts are manuscript, in three sets. A fourth set of parts is for the "Mirror song" only. The vocal parts are manuscript, many carrying performers' names. Nine parts are in Italian and 15 are in English. Eight of the English parts are marked "grand opera version." The chorus parts are English holographs marked "Meltzer version." Many bear performers' names. There are also two packages of interpolations in English. The promptbooks are typescript in English. Four bear the title "The love tales of Hoffmann," in a translation by Charles Swickard, and three are marked "Meltzer version." The dialogue parts are typescript, in English, in two sets. Performers' names appear on several parts.

Dramatist and critic. Born in London in 1853, Charles Henry Meltzer studied at Oxford University, where he won a scholarship at the age of fourteen. Meltzer also studied music in London and Paris. Meltzer became a correspondent for several newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and the New York Herald, and was also a music critic and writer for magazines. Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred.
