The vocal scores include 20 copies in German and French by Bote & Bock, Berlin (pl. no. 4320-4327) in two editions (1858 and 187- ), and three copies in English, by Boosey, London (ca. 1900), bearing the title "Paquerette." The orchestra parts are manuscript, in four sets. The vocal parts include six mimeoed manuscript English parts and four German manuscript parts bearing W. Kreitz's signature. The promptbooks include one book consisting of the printed libretto, in English, bearing the title "Love by lantern light," with bound-in manuscript stage directions; seven typescript books in English; four manuscript books in English, one of which is for the "Oscar Weil version" and two of which are labelled "special version E.J.W." ; and four German manuscript books, one of which carries the name of W. Kreitz and includes bound-in manuscript additions to the text. The dialogue parts include 13 sets of English typescript parts, one set of English manuscript parts labelled "special version E.J.W.," and six sets of German manuscript parts, one set carrying the stamp of Otto Laenger, three sets the signature of W. Kreitz, and one set the stamp of the Germania Theater. The lyrics are typed, in English. The accompanying material consists of a list of parts rented by George Schick of the University of British Columbia.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
