Dialogue parts (152). The vocal scores include one German edition by Bote & Bock, Berlin (pl. no. 10779) for the two-act version of the opera, one English edition by Boosey, and two French editions by Heugel, Paris. One edition is of the two-act version (1858, pl. no. H. 2372) and one is of the four-act version (1874?, pl. no. 4425). The chorus score is manuscript in English and is for the opening chorus only. The orchestra parts are manuscript and carry the title "Orpheus in the underworld." The vocal parts include two sets of German manuscript parts, many of which carry performers' names, three sets of bound mimeoed parts in English, and numerous unbound mimeoed parts in English comprising several sets of varying completeness. There are also two miscellaneous parts in English, one of which is manuscript, the other manuscript with typed text and bearing the indication "Denison University, Granville, Ohio." The chorus parts include 29 English mimeoed parts, many carrying performers' names, and 20 German manuscript parts, bearing performers' names and the titles "Orpheus in der Unterwelt" and "Orpheus in der Hölle." The promptbooks include six typescript books, in English, three of which are marked "Girard version, 1897," one manuscript in English in two volumes, and three German manuscript books, one of which carries the stamp of Mrs. Clara Bliesner, St. Louis. The dialogue parts include nine sets of mimeoed typescript parts in English. Four of these sets are marked "1897 version." There are also two miscellaneous parts in English typescript, three sets of German manuscript parts, and two miscellaneous typescript German parts.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
