ALS, 1827 January 7 : Washington City, to Joseph A. Denison.

Chase, who was to become Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court as well as Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln, here describes his life as a young school teacher in Washington City, while saving to pursue his law profession. He describes the city as well as the sons of John Quincy Adams. He says he has "attended a meeting of the American Colonisation Society ... and listened to the eloquen[t views] ... employed on the side of justice and humani[ty.]."
