Papers, 1800-1847.

Correspondence of the family of painter John Singleton Copley. Most of the letters were written to Elizabeth Copley Greene of Boston, Copley's daughter, by her mother, Susanna Farnum Copley, and her sister, Mary Copley, both of whom lived in England with the painter. There are a few letters from J.S. Copley to Gardiner Greene, his son-in-law, and from John Singleton Copley Jr. The letters contain occasional references to Copley's portraits and other paintings and to his financial difficulties. Comments on English social life and the effects of the Napoleonic Wars are frequent. After the death of J.S. Copley Sr. the letters pertain mostly to family matters, with some reference to British political affairs, particularly the affairs of J.S. Copley Jr., who became Baron Lyndhurst and Lord Chancellor.
