ALS, 1865 July 2 : Coloma (California), to James W. Denver.

The Californian writes his brother of their financial problems. He will attempt to collect his claim in the Sutter grant, and in the Fremont and Indiana Railroad. For the 4th of July, "the people have split on the Negro question & will have separate celebrations. In fact the Republican Party are likely to split wide open on the negro equality issue."

James W. Denver was born near Winchester, Virginia. He attended public schools and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1830, settling near Wilmington. In 1841 he taught school in Missouri, and in 1844 he graduated from the law school of the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law near Xenia, Ohio.
