Manuscript letter apparently written response to Clark's suggestion that a club be organized to foster a spirit of kinship between men of letters in the United States and Great Britain. Sparks also refers to a review by Campbell of Geraldine of Desmond and states his own intention of reviewing it in the North American Review. He also refers to Mr. Jones' "Indian Traditions", offers an extended criticism of Captain Basil Hall's Travels in North America in the years 1827 and 1828, and mentions the appointment of Washington Irving as secretary of the U.S. legation in London

Jared Sparks (1789-1866) was the President of Harvard University from February 1, 1849 to February 10, 1853. He was also a Unitarian minister, editor, and historian.
