Woodruff family collection 1796-1950

This collection includes letters between George Whitefield Woodruff and Aaron Dickinson Woodruff pertaining to the construction of George Woodruff's home, Oatland, outside of Trenton, New Jersey. There is also a memorandum on the Woodruff family and an explanatory note titled The Woodruff Letters, compiled by Edith Duncan Johnston, pertaining to the letters in the collection and outlining the Woodruff-Houstoun-Johnston family connection. Additionally the collection includes a bank note for $32.34 payable to George Woodruff by the Planters Bank of the State of Georgia.

Edith Duncan Johnston (1878-1963) was born in Savannah, Georgia, the daughter of James Houstoun Johnston and Eugenia Cunningham Duncan Johnston. She was active in cultural, patriotic, social, and religious circles in Savannah. She was Secretary of the Savannah Girl Scouts, 1912-1913, 1915-1917, and was the first National Secretary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, 1913-1914. From 1919-1929, she was the Publicity Director for the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia and from 1920-1926, ...
