Ira Williams letter, 1839 June 16.

Letter from Ira Williams, a college student writing from Georgetown, Ky., to his cousin Matthew Gauldin of Kellertown, Wilkinson County, Miss. Williams describes his dire financial situation and requests money to pay college room and board and other expenses. He also comments enthusiastically on the possible candidacy of William Southgate for a U.S. congressional seat representing Kentucky, making some unflattering allegations about the sexual behavior of the district's former representative, Richard M. Johnson.
