Journal, 1820-1823

Journal kept by Thomas Mann Randolph as a midshipman aboard the Guerriere in the Mediterranean, from January 1 to October 3, 1820, which contains sea, harbor and port logs with speed, weather and courses, the movements of the Squadron and other ships, and notes on changes from the daily routine. Also included are "Internal Rules and Regulations of the U. S. Frigate Guerriere" and a "General Watch, Quarter and Station Bill" of the ship. The volume was apparently later used by Randolph's sister, Elizabeth C. Randolph, as a commonplace book, with essays and poetry, and as a record of a journey through India in June 1823. She comments on morality of the Indians, and describes villages and regions.
