William and Harvey Reid letters, 1863-1864.

This collection consists of correspondence between William A. Reid and his cousin, Harvey Reid. The letters, written between 1863 and 1864, give a first-hand account of what the Civil War was like for two young men from the North. The letters are in a typed manuscript format, as the originals were kept by William Reid's daughter.

Harvey Reid joined the United States Army at Racine, Wisc., in 1862. He served with the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment through 1865, participating in the campaigns against Morgan's Confederate Cavalry in Kentucky in 1863 and later in Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas. William and Harvey Reid were cousins. William Allen Reid (1846-1916) was born in Skaneteles, New York. He was a corporal in Captain F.P. Lawrence's Company F of the 39th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. He was discharged from service on September 22, 1864 by reason of the expiration of his term of service.
