Papers, 1791-1899.

Correspondence and genealogical papers of Boston merchant Theodore Chase and his sons Theodore and George Bigelow Chase. Some of the correspondence concerns insurance claims against Andrew Taylor & Co. of England for the loss of the cargo on Chase's ship Walter Scott, which burned and sank at sea in 1835. Other ships in which the Chases had interests were the Atalanta, the Buena Vista, the Bowditch, and the Industry. Ship accounts, business papers, and correspondence with captains and agents is included. The collection contains a large amount of clippings, correspondence, and genealogical notes concerning the Chase family and a recurring hoax in which a large British fortune was said to have been awarded to certain Chase heirs in America. Also included are the Portsmouth, N.H., deeds of William Chase, and account books of Theodore Chase, Sr. (1822-36), Theodore, Jr. (1853-62), and George Chase (1867-77). (Cont'd) Two letters from Salmon P. Chase (1869) and single letters from Henry Cabot Lodge (1899) and Charles Francis Adams (1899) are included.
