Pearson family papers, 1893-1939 (bulk 1916-1934).

Diaries, correspondence, articles, scrapbooks, ephemera and photographs of the Pearson family. The collection includes letters written by Dr. Pearson to his wife (Thea) and his daughter during his diplomatic assignments and a diary kept during his time in Poland. Elaine's diaries, letters and photo albums record her experiences as a member of the U.S. delegation to Europe. Diaries and scrapbooks kept by Elaine during high school and college as well as letters received from her future husband are also included along with letters written by Paul Pearson, photographs, and clippings from original newspapers which published the Hitler interview. The photographs in the collection consist of family candids, portraits, and photos and postcards related to diplomatic trips and travels in Europe. A scrapbook kept by Paul Pearson documents his time as American Consul at Bristol, England (1946-1948). A scrapbook of clippings by and about Alfred Pearson covers Scandinavian and Russian politics, Adolf Hitler, etc. (1932-1938).

Dr. Alfred John Pearson was a professor and dean of Drake University's College of Liberal Arts in Des Moines from 1907 to 1939. From 1924 to 1930 he also served as U.S. minister to Poland (1924-25) and Finland (1925-30). Following these ministerial appointments he traveled to Europe several times to study European economic and political conditions. In the summer of 1934 he interviewed Adolf Hitler just days after he had ordered the political executions of the infamous "Night of the Long Knives."...
