The Enderlin Collection of Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company Records, 1835-1956.

The collection consists of material acquired by Enderlin during his career with the Lackawanna, primarily the kind of historical miscellany that flowed into the secretary's office. Two-thirds of the collection consists of newsclippings on labor matters (ca. 1900-1919), and the remainder of agreements, letters of resignation, statistics and rough minutes.

James Archbald was born in Ayrshire, Scotland on March 3, 1793 and at the age of fourteen, immigrated to America with his parents. In 1817 he became a contractor on the Erie Canal and worked with John Jervis. Jervis appointed Archbald as an engineer on the Delaware and Hudson Canal which opened in 1828. Matthias Baldwin (b. 1795), a former jeweler and tool manufacturer, was commissioned in 1831 by Franklin Peale to fashion a miniature locomotive engine to be displayed at his Philadelphia Museum. John G. Enderlin was born on August 16, 1888. In 1903, he began work as an office boy in the New York City headquarters of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company, rising through the ranks in the president's and secretary's offices to become secretary-treasurer in 1933.
