Mary Octavine (Thompson) Cowper Papers, 1895-1969, bulk 1938-1969.

Personal and business correspondence, financial and legal papers, committee reports and minutes, writings and notes, printed material, photographs, newsclippings, and other papers. The bulk, 1938-1962, relate to the period when Mrs. Cowper was Executive Director of the Durham Nursery School Association, and provides information about the organization's operation and activities. Also reflected are other causes in which she was involved, including women's suffrage, conditions in textile mills, including the advocacy of labor legislation for women and children, and better home milk delivery service in Durham, N.C. Highlighted is her involvement with the North Carolina League of Women Voters and the Durham branch of the American Association of University Women. Her personal life is best documented in the correspondence from her husband, Frederick A. G. Cowper, a professor of French at Duke University, and other relatives and friends.
