Collection of 16 letters (13 holographs, 3 signed typescripts) from Rudyard Kipling to Edward Bok, as well as 7 letters (5 holographs, 2 signed typescripts) from Caroline Kipling to Bok. Title from cover. Some of the R. Kipling's letters, dated 1895, focus on publication of Kipling's William the Conqueror in Ladies' home journal, where Bok was editor. Rudyard Kipling's letters are dated: Mar. 25, 1895; Mar. 28, 1895; Apr. 11, 1895; Apr. 26, 1895; May 1, 1895; May 11, 1895; May 28, 1895; July 30, 1895; Oct. 10, 1895; Dec. 12, 1895; Dec. 20, 1895; Dec. 9, 1897; Nov. 8, 1900; Dec. 19, 1902; Oct. 9, 1903; Mar. 24, 1908. Caroline Kipling's letters are dated: Nov. 2, 1899; Nov. 30, 1899; Dec. 4, [1899?]; May 16, 1901; May 20, 1901; May 22, [1901]; Mar. 28, [1902?]. Only R. Kipling's letters of Mar. 25, May 11 and Oct. 10, 1895 are cited and reproduced in his collected letters (edited by Pinney). Letters are sealed in protective mylar sheets, interleaved with paper sheets, in library binding. Accompanied by typescript of letters in separate folder. Gift of Mrs. William Montelle Carpenter, 1941.

Born in the Netherlands, Edward Bok came to the United States with his family at the age of six. He worked in publishing from the age of thirteen. He founded the Brooklyn magazine and 1886 he established the Bok Syndicate Press. Bok became editor of Ladies' home journal in 1889.
