Transcript (handwritten) of the memoirs of Samuel West. Diaries, accounts, ledgers, and other papers. The memoirs of Dr. Samuel West (1738-1808) include coverage of West's ministry in Needham, Mass. and his participation in the Battle of Concord. Travel journals (1821-24) describe points of interest in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada. The diary (1846-47) of William B. Richards, a member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, includes an account of his horticultural interests in Dedham, Mass. The diaries and expense accounts (1846-62) of Henry Pickering Walcott, physician of Boston, include accounts (1862) of medical study in Berlin.

Walcott, (Harvard, A.B. 1858; Bowdoin, M.D. 1861) was chairman of the Massachusetts State Board of Health from 1886 to 1916 and was president of Massachusetts General Hospital from 1910 to 1928. Following medical school he studied in Vienna and Berlin (1861-1863) and in Paris and London (1865-1866). He practiced in Cambridge, Mass. He had a long association with Harvard University in various administrative positions (Overseer, 1887 to 1890; Fellow, 1890-1927; and acting president, 1900 to 1901)....

Samuel West (1738-1808) was the son of the Rev. Thomas West (1708-1790), of Rochester, Mass., and the cousin of the renowned Rev. Dr. Samuel West (1730-1807), of New Bedford, Mass. Samuel West, the former, graduated from Harvard in 1761 and settled as minister in Needham, Mass., from 1764 to 1788, when he became minister of the Hollis Street Church in Boston.
