Papers relating to Charlestown, Mass., particularly the Harris family and the efforts of the heirs of John Harris to obtain compensation for lands they claimed within the boundaries of the Charlestown Navy Yard. Included are numerous Charlestown deeds, legal papers, correspondence of Richard D. Harris and Samuel D. Harris, and a copy of an opinion on the Harris case by U.S. Attorney General Roger B. Taney. Also included are letters recommending the promotion of Major Samuel D. Harris, a sketch of his military service with the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons in the War of 1812, and copies of letters recommending Harris for the post of Surveyor and Inspector of the Boston Custom House from Daniel Webster, Harrison Gray Otis, H.A.S. Dearborn, and others. Also, letters recommending Richard D. Harris for the post of Navy Agent.
