Speed family papers, 1795-1850.

Letters between Judge John Speed, Lucy Gilmer Fry Speed, and their children. The collection contains several letters to and from Joshua Fry Speed while he was a young man and as he began his career in Springfield, Illinois. The papers also include a letter from John Shallcross of Louisville to William Shallcross of Staffordshire, England. Many of the letters discuss the health and welfare of the family and their social activities. Other issues discussed include agricultural prices, travel, the growth of the city of Louisville, and the effect of the California Gold Rush on Illinois. Transcripts of the letters are included in the collection.

The Speed family is one of Louisville's oldest and most prominent families. Judge John Speed owned a hemp plantation near Louisville, Kentucky. His son, Joshua Fry Speed, was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. The Shallcross's are related to the Speeds through Mary Ellen Shallcross who married William Pope Speed, a son of Lucy Gilmer Fry Speed and Judge John Speed.
