Correspondence, documents, personal notes, bonds, and other papers of Edward Hutchinson (1678-1752) of Boston, merchant, landowner, and treasurer of Harvard College; and his son, Edward Hutchinson, Jr. of Milton, Mass., judge, heir and administrator of the Hutchinson land. Correspondence and documents (1719-67) concerning the Hutchinsons' Kennebeck River land proprietorship in Maine outline the division of lands of Georgetown and Negausit Townships on Arousick Island, and refer to the dispute over ownership with the Plymouth Company. Some papers relate to the elder Hutchinson's business interests in Boston: Indian trade, mills, lumber, naval stores, and whaling products.

Edward Hutchinson was born in Massachusetts in 1678, the son of Elisha Hutchinson, a judge. He served as Boston's representative to the Massachusetts General Court (1717-1718), judge of the court of common pleas for Suffolk County (1723-1731), chief justice of the Suffolk County Court of Common Pleas (1743-1752), probate judge for Suffolk County (1746-1752), and as an officer in the Massachusetts Militia (1717; 1729-1733).
