Papers, 1838-1875.

Correspondence, bills, and business papers of John Cunningham, Boston merchant and agent involved in commerce in the Philippines, Japan, and China. The bulk of the papers concerns his affairs in Shanghai and Nagasaki with various merchants in the tea business. In 1870-1872 he served as agent in Boston for Walsh, Hall & Co. of Nagasaki. In 1873 he was agent for Hudson Malcolm & Co. of Yokohama. He also had various connections with Russell & Co. of Hong Kong, in which firm his brother Edward was a senior partner. Early correspondence includes letters from his brother Caleb Loring Cunningham. Other correspondents include: Arthur Brent, Philip Dumaresq, and John G. Walsh. An account book for 1842-1858 is located at the end of the collection.
