Papers and photographs, 1897-1957, (bulk 1897-1898).

Papers and photographs of Arthur S. Frank, a Milwaukee native who served with Company I, 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in the Spanish-American War. Scattered papers include photocopied military service records that provide the details of his service, an address book in which Frank tracked letters sent and received, and two passes written at Camp Cuba Libre in Jacksonville, Florida, where Frank's unit remained throughout the war. Also in the collection is a letter from Frank to his mother, written in 1897, in which he briefly describes some basic training at Camp Douglas (Wis.). Christmas letters listing members who died during the preceding year as well as surviving members document Frank's membership in the Company I, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Association. Photographs, mostly unidentified, include three bust views of Frank in uniform with hat. There are two identified pictures of uniformed men at Camp Douglas and several more similar, but unidentified shots that could be from the same location or from their wartime service in Florida. Also included are a photograph of General Fitzhugh Lee, who commanded the U.S. forces at Camp Cuba Libre and a candid shot of civilians, including many African-Americans, watching troops traveling through Nashville on their way to Florida. The oversized folder contains large format photographs including three unidentified shots of men who are presumably members of Frank's unit and an identified, formal portrait of the men at Camp Harvey (Wis.) with a decorative paper border.
