Charles Follen was a German-born educator, preacher, athlete, and reformer. His radical approach to reform in Germany made him unwelcome, and he fled to France, then Sweden, and finally America. During a checkered career at Harvard, he fomented a spirit of rebellion among students, taught wildly popular courses on German language and literature (the first such courses at Harvard), and incidentally introduced gymnastics to the school. Daniel Pierce Thompson was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, October 1, 1795, the son of Daniel and Rebecca (Parker) Thompson. When he was five years old the family moved to Berlin, Vermont. He entered Middlebury College, ca. 1817 and graduated in 1820. Upon graduation he spent several years in Virginia working as a tutor and studying law.
