Journal, correspondence, and sermons of the Rev. Joseph Henry Allen, a Unitarian minister perhaps best known for his Latin manuals. Allen preached in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; and Bangor, Maine, before leaving the active ministry in 1857 to become a teacher. His journal contains a wide range of observations on political issues, religion, and his personal life during the years he spent in Washington (1847-50). The correspondence is with his friend Hiram Withington, the minister of the First Congregational Society (Unitarian) in Leominster, Mass. Allen's father, the Rev. Joseph Allen, had helped prepare Withington for the ministry.
