These are chiefly the papers of Leeland Hathaway, his wife, Mattie Wheeler Hathaway, and daughter, Carrie Lee Hathaway. Letters and papers of Col. James Mason comprise a small portion of the Hathaway family papers. Photographs (removed to the Photo Archives) and newsclippings of hunting in Lexington make up still another group. An autochrome portrait of Carrie Lee Hathaway was added to the collection in 1968.

Soldier. Leeland Hathaway, a native of Clark County, Kentucky served under Confederate General John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War. He was held prisoner at Allegheny, Pennsylvania and at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland. He was captured while serving as a bodyguard to Jefferson Davis' wife, Varina Howell Davis. Burbridge was born on August 19, 1831 in Georgetown, Kentucky. He attended Georgetown College and the Kentucky Military Institute in Frankfort.
