Letters, 1776 January 31 to 1777 November 19 : San Diego, CA, to Don Antonio Bucareli y Urzua.

Rivera, sent to San Diego to Christianize the Indians, writes: "The insolence of these barbarians fills me with sorrow ... ", encourages the enlargement of garrisons in San Diego and Monterrey, mentions Anza concluding his business in San Francisco, comments on the arrival of horses, purchase of cattle, lack of wood for building, suggests that certain recaptured Indians be executed in order to set an example, begs to his superior that he be retired and says: "To define what the indians are or the formal method they require, I confess that the more I deal with them, the more I find I have to learn, and I am unable to decide on a way of ruling them."
