This collection consists of a volume, compiled in 1887, of statistics and epitaphs from graves in Colonial Park Cemetery. In 1887 a committee was formed by the Georgia Historical Society with the purpose of recording stone inscriptions from the cemetery; Adelaide Wilson and Georgia Weymouth, the author and illustrator of Historic and Picturesque Savannah (1889) recorded the epitaphs of approximately 700 gravestones for this project. The dates of included epitaphs range from 1762 until 1861. Some of the epitaphs are not included in the work, Some Early Epitaphs in Georgia, compiled by the Georgia Society of the Colonial Dames of America (Durham, N.C., 1924). In addition to the epitaphs and statistics, the volume contains a sketch created by Georgia Weymouth of the cemetery, marking the areas of the graves included in this project.

Colonial Park Cemetery was originally named Christ Church Parish Cemetery; it was familiarly known as the South Broad Street (now Oglethorpe Ave.) Cemetery. It was the first public burial ground in Savannah, and was closed to burials in 1853. The Wardens and Vestry of Christ Church claimed part of the cemetery. After some litigation the title was vested in the City of Savannah by an Act of the Legislature in 1895, stipulating that the City was to preserve and perpetuate it as a public park. ...
