Liberty Life Insurance Company Legal Department records, 1921-1981.

ArchivalResource

Liberty Life Insurance Company Legal Department records, 1921-1981.

The Legal Department not only provided services in settling disputed claims but also gave counsel and advice for a broad spectrum of corporate management. Such activities as the acquisition and sale of subsidiaries, personnel problems, the creation of pension plans, income tax matters, and negotiations with state and federal government agencies were all in the purview of the Legal Department. These files contain information on competitor insurance companies and portray difficulties in obtaining radio and television station licenses. Particularly interesting are the early records, which help document the careers of W. Frank Hipp, Henry L. Vogel, and G. Richard Shafto. Other noteworthy correspondents include: Wyatt Aiken, William F. Anderson, William P. Anderson, Charles A. Batson, William T. Black, Edgar A. Brown, Lewis Burk, D.S. Burnside, G.H. Cleveland, S.W. Crews, the law firm of Dow, Lohnes, and Anderson, William F. Evans, John R. Folsom, Reverend R.A. Forrest, B. Calhoun Hipp, Francis M. Hipp, George H. Hipp, Grady H. Hipp, Herman N. Hipp, John W. Lindsay, R.E. McDonald, M.M. Pennell Jr., John Rivers, J. Dudley Saumenig, and Robert R. Scales Jr. As a note of caution, the eight different Surety Series present a potentially confusing situation for researchers, as the name 'Surety' was used as a catch-all to name various Hipp family-controlled satellite corporations. Doyle Bogg's "The Liberty Spirit: History of The Liberty Corporation" (1986) deals with the origins of Surety (see especially page 41). Separate reference files entitled 'Surety' exist in The Liberty Corporation Subsidiaries Records.
