Dr. Chris North had a position at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (Great Britain). He was one of the founding members of the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute, where he worked from 1953 to 1977. There he was trialing and breeding vegetables for the Scottish climate; and produced the first uniform variety of cabbage in Britain. He published a book PLANT BREEDING AND HORTICULTURE (1979).
