ALS, 1816 March 9 : Washington, to Littleton W. Tazewell.

Under authority of Congress, Fulton had built a steam frigate which was launched in 1815, the year he died. Here Decatur, American naval officer writes to then lawyer Tazewell regarding the extension of a patent by "steam men" in Congress. He says: "Their bill is now before the senate. Its passage through that body is doubtful ... Mrs. Fulton will not derive the benefit of her Husbands talents & services to the public, unless they succeed. Decatur also refers to a position with the Navy Board which he thinks Tazewell may want to pursue.
