Among the topics covered in Spruance's letters are price lists of prints and drawings sent to Weyhe Gallery; exhibitions and sales; drafts of press releases; a list of lithographs destroyed by Spruance in 1932; news of the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Print Club of Philadelphia; a 1935 New Year letter reflecting on his work; other letters expressing aspirations, doubts and resolutions about his work; the progress of specific prints; some mention of his teaching at Beaver College, congratulations on Zigrosser's 1940 appointment to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and advice on housing in Philadelphia. After 1940, Spruance and Zigrosser both lived in Philadelphia, and Zigrosser was no longer the artist's dealer. Letters from Spruance mention Zigrosser's book The Artist in America; their growing friendship; travelling in Europe; social activities and openings at galleries and museums. Spruance died in 1971. Later letters and material in the file are from Winifred Spruance and concern her husband's posthumous reputation. Included with Spruance's letters are drafts and carbons of letters and essays by Zigrosser. There are also newspaper clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, invitations to openings and announcements for the release of suites of prints by Spruance.
