Paul Zsolnay began preparation for the founding of the publishing company in Vienna in 1923, and Werfel's novel Verdi: Roman einer Oper (1924) became the company's first publication. Zsolnay was Werfel's publisher from 1923 until 1938; after Werfel's exile from Austria following the Anschluss, Gottfried Bermann Fischer became his new publisher.
